Locanda San Martino in Alpago

The Locanda San Martino (Saint Martin’s Inn) is a historical inn in San Martino d’Alpago, in the municipality of Chies, a quaint village in the Belluno province of the Venice region. The inn is located within short reach of Lake Santa Croce and of Mount Col Nudo, the highest peak of the Alpago area.

The Menu: tradition, with a twist

Recently, the Alpago region has seen a consistent culinary development. The area stands out for its typical products where tradition meets experimentation. The Locanda San Martino makes no exceptions, as its menu includes both historical recipes and modern re-interpretation that wink at a more refined kind of cuisine. Above all, roe deer tagliatelle, cheese boards and roast lamb stand out the most, whilst among the latter customers can try polenta tacos with deer chili, goose liver with brioche bun and red berries, or the sweet giulia: a fruit and vegetables cold soup. Additionally, the inn organises “Asian weeks” — adapting Asian recipes to the classic venetian taste. Finally, the Locanda often offers off-the-menu specialties, such as ratatouille or saffron risotto with homemade bacon.

The family lamb

Both the inn and the farm where most of the ingredients come from are family businesses. Among these ingredients is the Alpagota lamb, the king of the menu. This ovine is an autochthonous species protected by the presidium issued by the Slow Food Foundation whose tender meat can only be truly tasted in Alpago.

Vegan & Gluten-free options

The inn’s menu is approved by the members of the Italian Celiac Association (AIC), which guarantees that the preparation of gluten-free recipes occurs in a dedicated environment. Moreover, the inn also offers several vegetarian dishes. For example, lasagne with morels, wild herbs and saffron, or Cacio cheese and pepe egg with fava beans and asparagus.

Aperitivo with a view

The atmosphere of the inn is sober yet refined. Additionally, the Locanda offers a terrace with a view of the village. There, clients can enjoy original cicchetti (the traditional, tapas-like Venetian finger food), accompanied by a vast selection of local, national and international wines.

A family between tradition and innovation

The Locanda San Martino finds the perfect mix between tradition and innovation, which reflects the innkeepers’ experience and personalities. It is a family-run business, where the first generation of sisters — Gabriella and Norina Barattin — was joined by a second one —Alice’s and Giulia’s, together with their partners Paolo and Alberto. All of them will be happy to welcome you and take care of you.
